  • 12volt Auxillary power source

Hi All, Apologies if I am asking something that has been asked before and another apology if this post is in the wrong section. Can anyone assist with an idiots guide of how to install a 12v cigar socket / usb charger into the zzr 1200 electrical system please?

Much appreciated and thanks in advance,

    Gareth

When i had the zed i ran wire from under the seat all the way to handle bar, on the handle bar (close to the T) i epoxy a cigarette lighter plug (marine with rubber cap) i used to run my radar detector from it. When i needed to power up 2 source i had a Y shape plug in my tank bag.

Instead of cigarette lighter you can buy a usb directly. I bought one for my drz but havent installed it yet.

LOL I think my Motolights are on that one. The power outlets (I have 2) are off the battery. There's something else under there, I forget what ????

I personally do not like the idea of having the outlet on the cowl (spelling ?) Only because everytime you take them off then you have to disconect those wire

The leads on my 12v power socket were quick disconnect, so no prob when removing the inner cowling on my 1200. Nevertheless, the power socket on my current bike, ZX-14R, is attached to the neck of the frame. I did not want to drill a hole in my inner cowling this time. I also like that it is out of sight and the cord to my radar detector gets tucked into the fairing. Some people just run only a radar detector power cord without a 12v socket, but I prefer a socket for charging other devices.

                    +1 for quick disconnects.

Have quick disconnects on my power outlet in the saddlebag of my V Star too.

                    Handy little things!

                      Thoughts.....
-- If I was only going to install one socket, I would install a cigarette lighter socket and separately add a plug-in for converting the cig socket to USB. I would only install a USB-only outlet if I was CERTAIN that all my gear would be USB.... If you ever see yourself using heated gear via this socket, for example, USB won't cut it (not enough Amps). So, I'd choose the cig socket with USB adapter for the versatility. YMMV

I installed a fused SAE wire directly from the battery.
The lead is long enough to reach inside of my TankBag.
My Battery Tender, Cigar Lighter, and heated Vest all have SAE connections.

                        It works for me.

Thanks for all the replys, went with the usb from amazon above and installed into the rh cowl, looks good and compliments the binnacle lights at night time, just need to work out how to mount a 1 inch ball socket to the yoke. Wired it in form the rhs brake light switch which is on the starter circuit

Stem mount. Have this on my 04. Don't mess with the rubber plug one, it doesn't work.

I think I have an extra one somewhere. I'll check, if I do, I'll make you a deal on it if you're interested.
