  • How to: Add Pictures to your Posts

I've come across several posts recently where folks are not sure how to include photos in their posts... There are several ways to do it, including uploading photos to your own gallery on this web site, but I've found that the easiest way for me to post photos is as follows..

This method is very flexible and works for most (all?) online message boards that allow linked photos.

    1. Sign up for a free account at photobucket.com
.. There are other free sites for "free image hosting".. do a search and you'll find many others.. Photobucket has worked for me for 2 years.. If you want to upload LOTS of content and video and are willing to spend a few bucks on a more full-featured image hosting site, I recommend SmugMug.com.. I am not affiliated with either site.. SmugMug is owned by the same guy that owns the ADVRider.com web site, so, you'd be supporting a fellow rider at SmugMug.

    2. Edit your photos on your PC so that they are correctly cropped, and resized to about 800 x 640 resolution (or similar).. This size photo will fit nicely on a browser page and still have reasonable resolution and detail. If your photos are too big, the full image will not be visible on the page all at once.. readers will have to scroll around to see it.. Also, too-big photos take longer to load on the readers browser.. There are editing utilities available inside photobucket and smugmug and others, but, I find that editing on my PC is faster (MUCH) and easier. YMMV
---Here's a great free viewer that can do basic edits... http://www.irfanview.com/
---For more advanced edits, this is the best free editor I've found.. http://paint.net/

    3. Upload photos to photobucket (or wherever you've chosen)

    4. On photobucket, mouse-over the photo you want to add into your post... a drop-down list will open automatically... Select the "Img" text, copy it, and then come back to ZZR bikes and paste that text into your post... [see photo below]
UPDATED: Now when you mouse-over your photo a "gear" icon appears. Now mouse over the "gear" and select "share links" to find the links. Then select the "Direct link" and place that link between the [img][/img] tags.

    5. Preview the post on ZZRBikes.. make sure the pics show up properly..
The PREVIEW button is your friend... Use it..

    6. Once you're happy with the post, hit the Submit button.

    Cheers.

    EDITED FOR NEW INSTRUCTIONS:
Photobucket has made some changes in how they provide links to photos. The "Img" link has changed and doesn't work the same way any more.
Now I just use the "Direck Link" code.

Here is the updated way to do it...

Keywords: photo, photos, pics, image, images, photographs, include

Great post. The most comprehensive, detailed instructions on the "how do I post my picture?" question I've seen in the years I've been on the site.

So.. Now that you're an expert at posting your own photos, the next skill to master is posting links to other photos, from other web sites..

For example, maybe I want to show you a photo of the Tour Master Synergy heated jacket I want to purchase..

Here's the photo, cross-linked from the Tour Master Web site.

"Cool" you say? "But, how'd you do that?"..

      Here's how...
This is usually easy, but, there are a few things you need to be careful about..
Check my comments at the end of this post..

The process differs depending on the browser you're using..
Firefox is really easy, only one step... IE is not too bad, but two steps..

For this example, I'm using an image from the BikeBandit web site..

      FIREFOX..
Find the photo you want.. then...
Right click on it and select.. "Copy Image Location"
Then go to the post you're writing on ZZRBikes.com and type the following..
      1. [img] <--- Be sure to include the open and close brackets and you MUST use these same square brackets.. Parenthesis ( or ), or upper case brackets { or } will not work..
      2. Type "Ctrl-V" to paste the link location
      3. [/img] <-- don't forget the slash.
Use the Preview button to make sure it works..
Here's what the typed line will look like inside your message window..
The below text shows up as a link, because I added some extra spaces on both sides of the link.. between the IMG tags and the URL.. If you remove the spaces, the text will be replaced with the actual image, if you've copied and pasted a proper address link..
      [img] http://www.bikebandit.com/assets/pro...SynJktLnLG.gif [/img]

Doing the Same Thing in IE is a bit different ..
Find the photo you want.. then...
Right click on it and select.. "Properties"
When the Properties box opens, you'll see the web location of the photo listed as "URL Address"
Click and drag your mouse to highlight this address, then type "Ctrl-C" to copy it..
Then go to the post you're writing on ZZRBikes.com and insert your photo the same way as for FireFox... Type the following..

      Things to be careful about..
      1. The link address (URL) MUST end in JPG or GIF, otherwise the forum software will not know how to process the link.. Many times, you'll paste a link and see HTTP://ProperURL.jpg&output=1&highlight=dog .. All you need to do to fix this link is delete everything that comes after JPG... then make sure you have [img] [/img] around it (no extra spaces)

      2. Cross-linking or Cross-Posting images is sometimes frowned upon... First, every time someone loads the image, it uses up bandwidth that's paid for by the owner of the image and Second, if I wanted to be really sneaky, if you cross-posted one of my images... I could replace an innocent photo of a jacket, with something inappropriate or pornographic and give it the same name... The next time somebody opened your post, there would be a naked picture of Pamela Anderson (like there's anyone that's not already seen one of those) or something else that you might not want to see posted under your name.. So.. Cross-link photos at your own risk.. FYI.. I do it all the time.. Just be aware.

Try it.. it's not so difficult after you figure it out a few times..

      Cheers.

            That's a pretty tough benchmark...

Can we make this a "Sticky"?

I have to do things 100 times with help before I can do it once on my own.

                Resizing images

Try this - PIXresizer - it'll resize whole folders at a time - quick, easy and free!

Thanks Artaroos. This is what I needed. I will get my Isle of Man TT photos loaded up as soon as I have a free minute or two.

Re: How to: Add Pictures to your Posts

Is there a sticky anywhere that contains this info. My desktop blew up a couple of weeks ago and I will want to try again to upload pictures when I get it replaced. I tried multiple time to use the gallery here and was only successful a couple of times. I like the idea of tagging in a photo directly to a thread best.

With all the new member signups recently, I made this a sticky. At least for a while.

                            Thanks, that's great.

Only thing I'd add is you don't need to resize the photo - Photobucket takes care of that somehow, as long as you post the IMG link.

                              Thanks!

The PB links have changed. The "img" link is not the same as is was... It doesnt have the built-in [img] tags any more... PB changed it. I find using the "direct link" easiest now.
I've updated the instructions in the OP with a new photo (see OP).

As for resizing, I think that's a setting on each account. I don't have "auto resize" turned on. (at least I don't think so ). I prefer to resize my photos myself and not have PB do anything to them without my input. I can certainly see why this would be a handy feature for some folks.... YMMV.
