  • Runnin' On Borrowed Time

Fired up the Zed yesterday and went for a little spin. It's been a couple of months since I last rode it and I wanted to get some gas through the carbs. Was a bit concerned they may have started to get gummed up but the bike fired right up and ran great.
This bike has always amazed me in that it starts right up whenever you hit the starter. I keep it on a battery tender whenever I'm not riding it but the battery is 10 years old!! The guy I bought it from put a new battery in it just before he sold it. I've had it 10 years in May and have not changed the battery.
I know I should replace it but now I want to see how long it will go. Like I said, Runnin' on borrowed time.

I never heard about 10 years battery. Usually 4 years.
    Which brand?

I was a little disappointed with Kawasaki when my OEM battery gave up after only 10 years of service.
I have since replaced it with an SSB Glass Mat (dry cell) battery, about 9 years ago, still going strong. I initially had it in my ZRX, where it at some stage failed to start the bike on a few occasions. I then tested it in my ZZR, and it was fine, and has been ever since.

I start to believe that in Europe we may have some kind of pollution regulation preventing the manufacturers to built batteries in the right way.
I experienced some OEM battery last 8 years, but the replaced one between 4..6 years

The battery in my 2002 lasted 90,000 miles. Not sure how many years that was. There was nothing wrong with it but I replaced it right before a big trip because I didn't want to risk a failure in the boonies.

I've had a Shorai in my 2003 for 7.5 years and no issues yet. Fingers crossed.

I honestly don't recall. I would have to pull the seat and the tool box to check.

Wow...After reading these results all I can is, What a testament to the Zed's charging system. I had a '96 VFR for 7 years and went through 5 battery's, 4 R/R's and 2 stators. Haha.

The Zed does have a proper alternator, I'm sure that helps.

I got 12 years out of my 02 ZED OEM battery. I understand it was a Japanese manufactured Yausa battery as apposed to the US manufactured
one. My battery was still good when I changed it out too. It was just getting slow to spin over after sitting for a while so I got a new one. My ZED
never spent one minute on a charger either. I contacted Yausa about it's longevity too, and they said it wasn't all that uncommon for the Japanese
                      version.

I fitted a Yuasa to the R1 after repairing the charging system in 2015. Still going strong.
