Pilot Road 4 opinions

I checked the wear at the weekend and both tyres look nice and even so far. Based on the centre wear, the rear should last about 5,000 miles, which is about the same as the last M7RR. The front has hardly worn at all.

I am having more fun in the twisties though - gas mileage has also dropped!

No issues with grip when accelerating, although the rear did slide a little once on corner entry where the road surface changed, but I've had that happen with the M7RR also.

A quick end of life report, as the centre grooves on the rear are just about down to the wear bars after 8,000 miles. That is nearly twice as far as the previous M7RR, and they are known as a high mileage sports tyre. The front is still good with a little cupping on the RH side and the same shoulder is just starting to flatten.

They have mostly been great. I have felt more confident on them than any of the sports tyres I used previously, as they somehow combine stability with quick steering. Plenty of grip on dry roads and they made riding in the wet enjoyable.

The one negative is the centre compound on the rear seems a little hard. I have slid the rear a couple of times on damp roads, but strangely it has been fine when it's properly wet.

So it will soon be replacement time, and I am unsure what to do. I would be perfectly happy with another set, but everyone tells me that the Road 5 is better. Then there's also the Power 5 to consider.

Road 2s were my favourite, until the Road 5s came along.

I finally replaced the PR4s at 8,600 miles. They could have gone longer as there was just over 1 mm of tread in the rear centre grooves, but it won't pass the WoF inspection like that. Also, the wear was starting to affect the handling so time for a new set, which is a story in itself.

I decided on a set of Road 5s, but no one in Auckland had a 190/55 rear, and the shipment of Michelin tyres due in November had been delayed. After a few phone calls, I finally found one in a bike shop in Hamilton, about 80 miles from where I live, and had them fitted just before Christmas.

I scrubbed them in on New Year's Day. All good, although the faster turn in nearly caught me out turning onto the road at the end of our driveway!

Then again, they're on a ZX 14 and I ride fairly aggressively.

I'd used 3 sets of M7RR before, and never managed much more than 4,000 miles from a rear. The fronts lasted longer, I'd use 2 front tyres for every 3 rears.

I've done more trips than usual in the last year, which seems easier on tyres. But I was not expecting twice the mileage!

I'm running Power5's still (second set) I have ran the Road5's twice before, great tire but they get hard and move around to much for me.
I have gotten around 5-6 K out of them though. The Powers, stick like pine rosin on a car window. I get about 4K out of them. my favorite
tire on the Zed at this point.

The Zed seems to like sports tyres. The best overall for me was the Dunlop SportSmart 2, but the Pirelli Rossa Corsa was the most fun. The rear didn't even last 3,000 miles though!

It was a toss up whether to get the Road 5 or the Power 5. Still early days, but the Road 5 feels grippier than the PR4 with faster turn in, more like a sports tyre.

I’ve been running the Road 5’s for a while. I’ve been happy with the mileage and performance. I see Michelin has recently introduced the Road 6. I will follow the reviews and will probably give them a try when I need to re-tire next.
