Started the winter maintenance a couple days ago. Bought the bike in March with 23,000 miles on the clock and have 31,955 miles right now. Last major service was done with previous owner in 2013 with about 20,000 miles on her.
. Will be doing the sync when all is back together. This is the first major service I've done since getting the bike. Have a couple questions which I figured the pro's here could advise me on.
1. Got the carburetors cleaned and installed a .020 shim under the needle before closing up. Do I need to adjust the air screw since putting in the shim? The factory "no-tamper" cap is still on my carbs. I still have the bits from an Ivan's kit on my last bike to remove the cap if needed.
2. Found a fair amount of gunk under the valve cover. Is this something that others have experienced and is it normal? I did note my oil level decreasing and fuel mileage dropping as I got closer to deciding it was maintenance time. Lost about 1/2 qt of oil and mileage dropped 2mpg over the course of ~3000 miles. Valve clearances were not what I expected (see picture below) so I'm assuming that was the real reason behind the loss of oil.

3. Measured all the clearances (a few times) and wrote down all the measurements. Can someone give me an idea if I'm on the right track with the shim thicknesses needed?

As of right now, I do not have the shim kit and was likely going to just swing into the local stealership and see if they had the correct sizes I think I need. I also put the old ones back in after measuring the actual shim thickness vs. the marked thickness so I didn't loose them.
There was very little oil in the spark plug galleys so I wasn't to disappointed, and yes, I'll be replacing the figure 8 gaskets for the plugs. Plug gap was .32. I do not have the installed gap, but mileage was just shy of 12000 miles. Intent is to install iridium plugs as replacement, but not opposed to standard NGK's.
4. Input on what exactly needs to be removed for all the KLEEN crap under the tank would be of great insight if someone could share that. I understand the valve cover tubes get connected, or blocked off and the valve up at the nose fairing gets removed, but what about the rest of the stuff under the tail? All the crap doesn't bother me, but if will make the bike run better and be easier for maintenance, I'm in all the way. If it won't make a difference in the general running condition of the bike, then I'll likely leave it. Just seems like an octopus got trapped under the tank and wrapped itself around everything. Also thinking about doing the ZX-10 plug coils mod to clean things up as well. Depends if I can find a decent price on the coils and wire harness.
Figuring since my jacket zipper froze up on the last ride home from work, I should probably put her up for a little while.....till it warms up slightly anyway.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
