  • Am I thinking right about this ?

Bike starts on choke and even after warmed up will die if choke is taken off or if I open throttle.
Checked and cleaned plugs and fuel filter is clean.
I think I have clogged carb jets.
I'm ready to pull the carb bank and clean the carbs.
I doubt if it is the fuel pumps.
They spool up when key is turned on.
It's a 2003 and only has 9000 miles, I've had it 3 years, but I don't believe the carbs have ever been cleaned.
So, am I right about this ?

Yep. Tear down the carbs, thoroughly clean them, including the idle jets, put back together, sync, and you should be good to go.

Got the carb bank out, here goes.
The last of the great carb bikes.
After these I figure I can do anything.
Mark, how hard is it to synch these, anything special I should know ?

I use one similar to one of these quite successfully.

Sinc is for suckers, fine tuning, and way after the rest is sorted.

Indeed. I named my carbs Harley, and they sucked the entire time I owned them!

Strange, my carbs are clean as new, literally, will test the fuel pumps next.

Nope. It runs on full or partial choke just fine. Am going to try re-installing carb bank and run fresh non-oxy fuel. If no change have to suspect fuel pumps. Question : can the bike run on full or partial choke with dead fuel pumps purely from gravity feed ? If no results from re-trying I will remove and bench test fuel pumps. I have a VF500F Interceptor that runs fine on gravity feed after I removed thye dead fuel pump. Don't know if this bike is too complex to run with dead fuel pumps.

Wouldn’t it be all or nothing with fuel pumps? I don’t think it would run at all, well maybe start and idle shortly, without the fuel pumps working.

Got the carbs back in, need to hook up the fuel pumps and try again.
You are thinking what I was assuming, all or nothing.
If I am dumb lucky my problems was old corn juice in the reserve tank.
After sucking out the gas I was surprised when I removed the tank, thought I got it all, but had to work at it on the bench shaking it around and laying it on its side to get all the rest of the gas out.
Now it has half a tank of non-oxy in it waiting for a re-try.

Check the carb vent tube. If it's blocked, you'll see the same effect. The tube comes out front under the lights
